First Aid Kit

If there were a dollar for every accident or disaster you can predict in your lifetime, you'd be quite rich right now. Since we all enjoy the uncertainties in life, being prepared for several emergencies won't hurt. Being able to clean and treat wounds, administer medicines or perform emergency assistance to injured people would be easier if you had a First Aid Kit with you.

First Aid Kits of today are a far cry from before, a shot of whiskey, a knife, matches and gun powder will not pass for a certifiably complete one (its more like an McGyver emergency kit).

First Aid Kits are the first things you grab when an accident happens or when there is an injured person who needs help with wounds or bumps and bruises. Basic first aid paraphernalia MUST be sterile: gloves, operating sponge or thick pre-cut gauze, packing bandages, needle, thread and scissors for treating burns and wounds. NOTE: Burn ointments are dabbed with sterile gauze but not bandaged until a medical technician arrives.

First Aid Kits have medication in them, basically for pain, fever, clogged nose, toothache, diarrhea, upset stomach and anti-histamines. To check on a person's temperature, have at least (2) oral thermometers and (1) digital thermometer for children available in the kit, vital stats are important for medical personnel to know when they arrive.

Depending on your surroundings and family health status, you can add medication to your kit for certain ailments that are present in your family. Medicines for asthma, heart medicines and insulin must be included and checked often for expiration. In areas that are exposed to wild life, shots of anti-venin, anti-tetanus and ant-rabies can be stocked in the kit if available. Before investing on ingestion emergencies, research on what safety procedures can be done for ingested poison, over dosages since not all treatments suggest vomiting or lining stomach with active charcoal.

If need be, have a gluco-meter, a spygmomanometer and stethoscope in your kit. A more complete First Aid Kit makes administering relief to injured persons easier and faster. Signing -up and going to First Aid Training can add to your skills, especially in administering emergency techniques such as CPR and Heimlich Maneuver.
